No, it's usually not too bad. I think when it's all said and done I'm not really jacking it up too much. Good cables, clean power, etc.
I did the shielding thing on one of my Strats not too long ago. That can make a huge difference in some rooms, but I guess that would be true without anything pre-amp though.
